Recently there have been a lot of fuss about coin cell sized tracking devices which can be attached to things like keys, bags, wallets, etc and when they are not in predefined proximity you receive an alert on your smart phone. These tracking devices use Bluetooth to communicate with the smart phone and this led me to wondered how engineers were able to squeeze whole bluetooth chipset and microcontroller in such a small form factor, so I did some search for the IC’s that can be used to build a similar device and found Texas Instruments makes these chips (CC2540 and CC2541) which not only include a bluetooth low energy device but also have a 8051 uC in the same chip which have considerable amount of flash that can be used for customized application. So I ordered the CC2540 Bluetooth low energy mini development kit with keyfob (TI also have other kits which have various sensor with the BLE chip, sensor tag kit). Sometime back I received the kit and made this unboxing video and took pictures of it. Currently BLE is supported by IPhone, IPad and 4.3 and up versions of Android.
